Experience the Hallbrooke Community
Ted and Kathy Greb may not hold an elected office but they do claim the title of "first family of Hallbrooke" because they were, in fact, the first family to move into the north Norman community in May of 2006. "It was very, very quiet when we were the only people living out here" remembers Kathy, who declares that the peace and quiet are two of the greatest advantages of her Hallbrooke home.
Norman natives and high school sweethearts, the Grebs lived in far west Norman for 30 years. As they neared retirement, Ted from OG&E and Kathy from Norman Public Schools, the empty nesters were making plans to build a one-level home with upscale amenities that would make their golden years relaxed and comfortable. The only catch was location. A greenbelt with walking access was high on the Grebs' wishlist. While on the hunt for the perfect spot, Ted mentioned his search to his friend Trey Bates who immediately told him of his plans for Hallbrooke. When Kathy and Ted visited it for themselves, they were sold.
"So much of Norman is flat," Ted points out, "but I love the terrain in Hallbrooke. There are rolling hills and sloped roads. It feels very different out here." Knowing they would have their choice of lots, access to a greenbelt and a community clubhouse complete with pool were some of the features that closed the deal. "Our old house had a pool and we were looking to get out of the pool business" Ted remembers.
The Grebs chose a lot that backs up to a greenbelt, found a house plan on-line and worked with their selected builder to adapt and build their retirement dream home. But while Hallbrooke is the scene for their retirement, both Ted and Kathy are glad to live in a community that is home to all ages. "As more families moved in we welcomed them all and are pleased that there are a number of families with young children nearby," says Kathy.
The clubhouse and pool have been assets to the Grebs social and family lives as well. "We've hosted our Sunday School Christmas party at the clubhouse over the past 3 or 4 years," says Ted, "and it's so much more comfortable than having 50-60 people in your house." In the summer their grandson, who lives in Connecticut, has enjoyed the pool while his grandparents have enjoyed not having a pool to maintain.
After nearly four years of life in Hallbrooke, both Grebs are fully satisfied with their choice of home. "We love it out here. The location, the peace and quiet, our neighbors and new friends, the setting with the trees, the wildlife of deer and birds make this a great place to live," shares Kathy. "We really feel like we live in the country. But the truth is that Hallbrooke is closer to downtown Norman than our house on the west side was," adds Ted.
